.More Hiking – The Way is the Goal
More Hiking was created from a lifelong connection to the outdoors and a simple belief:
Hiking should make you feel more confident, safer, and happier every time you step onto the trail.
Where It All Began
I grew up in a fairly rural part of Nova Scotia, Canada, where nature wasn’t something you visited — it was part of everyday life. My family also had a small summer home, and every year we would pack up and move there for the season. Those summers were spent hiking wooded trails, camping under open skies, kayaking quiet waters, and fishing with family.
If you’ve ever looked up on a clear night and felt small under a sky full of stars, you’ll understand why those early years mattered so much. That’s where my love for the outdoors began.
Learning the Value of Preparation
As a teenager, I joined the local militia. Each year, I spent several weeks training in wooded environments — learning navigation, field skills, and how preparation and calm decision-making matter when you’re far from help. It was challenging, exciting, and deeply rewarding.
That experience eventually led me to serve in the military, where I had limited field exposure but learned discipline, responsibility, and the importance of looking out for the people around you. I served my country, raised a family, and spent many years in public service.
Passing It On
When my children were born, I made a conscious decision to introduce them to the outdoors early. Camping trips, hikes, and travel became a way for us to slow down, disconnect from daily noise, and reconnect with what really matters. Those years reinforced something I still believe strongly today:
The outdoors isn’t about pushing limits — it’s about building confidence, awareness, and appreciation for the journey.
Why MoreHiking Exists
As I near retirement from public service, I felt a strong pull to return to the things I love most. When I came across the opportunity to take over MoreHiking.com, it felt like the right next step for me.
This site isn’t about hype or extremes. It’s about:
- Helping hikers make smarter gear choices
- Sharing clear, honest information
- Encouraging safe decision-making on the trail
- Supporting hikers at every experience level
I spend my time researching equipment, breaking down what actually matters, and sharing insights in a way that’s practical, approachable, and grounded in real experience. Over time, MoreHiking is becoming a place where people can learn, share, and trust the information they find.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple:
Help you hike smarter, safer, and with more joy.
Whether you’re a beginner heading out on your first trail, a parent hiking with kids, or someone returning to the outdoors later in life — you belong here.
Because at the end of the day, the destination matters less than the path you take to get there.
